Riefkohl
- Allgemeine Etymologie The name Riefkohl is a connection of the two parts "Rief" and "Kohl". The meaning of "Rief" is clear, it`s an old German form of "reiben", which means "to rub" (but the very similar word "rieben" meant "twist" or "roll"!). "Kohl" may have the meaning "cabbage", this is even today still the same word. But in the middle age it also was a short form of "Kohle"- "coal" and a short form of "Kogel", this is a hood. |
- Geschichte meines Zweiges / History of my branch The first known ancestor was Georg Daniel Riefkohl, *1660 in Göttingen, Germany. He was a tax collector in Göttingen and the Public Prosecutor of the "Dumontisches Regiment" (army). His wife was Regina Catharina von Schneen. |
