Nachtigall

- Allgemeine Etymologie

Im Namen Nachtigall findet sich galan (=singen). Nachtigall ist daher entweder ein Synonym für den Sangesfrohen oder konkret Minnesänger, möglich wäre aber auch die Bezeichnung eines Vogelfängers bzw. -händlers.

The translation of Nachtigall is nightingale. "Galan" is part of this name, this means "to sing". So Nachtigall perhaps means a singer or a minnesinger, but it`s also possible that it means a bird catcher or a bird dealer.

Das interessante am Nachnamen Nachtigall ist, dass sich alle Angehörigen deutscher Abstammung prinzipiell in einen der zwei großen Stämme einteilen lassen. Der erste ist der Altmärkische Stamm, das Wappen dieses Stammes zeigt eine Nachtigall auf einem Nadelbaum. Der zweite ist der Plesse-Stamm, sein Wappen zeigt eine Nachtigall auf einem Laubbaum.
Ich selbst bin Nachfahre des Plesse-Stammes. Dieser läßt sich zurückverfolgen bis zu Claus Nachtigall, * ca. 1530 in Bovenden bei Göttingen, seit 1559 Besitzer des Gnickhofes, ab 1570 letzter Vogt der Herrschaft Plesse.

The most interesting of the surname Nachtigall is the fact, that there are only two big Nachtigall families in Germany- everyone with this name belongs to one of this families. The first are the Nachtigall from the Altmark around Stendal, their coat of arms shows a conifer with a nightingale on it. The second family comes from the Plesse area in the north of Göttingen, their coat of arms contains a deciduous tree and a nightingale.
I`m part of the Plesse family, we can trace our roots back to Claus Nachtigall, * about 1530 in Bovenden near Göttingen, since 1559 he was the owner of the Gnickhof (farm), since 1570 he was the last Vogt (administrator) of the Plesse county. Above you see my other ancestors in chronological order.
