- Allgemeine Etymologie

Der Name Riefkohl setzt sich aus den beiden Teilen "Rief" und "Kohl" zusammen. Während Rief relativ eindeutig ist, dies meint altdeutsch "reiben" (rieben bedeutet aber auch drehen!), kann "kohl" sowohl den eigentlichen Kohl meinen, als auch eine Kurzform von Kohle sein oder auch eine kontrahierte Form von "Kogel", das ist eine Kapuze.

The name Riefkohl is a connection of the two parts "Rief" and "Kohl". The meaning of "Rief" is clear, it`s an old German form of "reiben", which means "to rub" (but the very similar word "rieben" meant "twist" or "roll"!). "Kohl" may have the meaning "cabbage", this is even today still the same word. But in the middle age it also was a short form of "Kohle"- "coal" and a short form of "Kogel", this is a hood.

Der älteste bekannte Vorfahr ist Georg Daniel Riefkohl, *1660 in Göttingen. Er war Licenteinnehmer in Göttingen, Auditeur beim Dumontischen Regiment ebenda und verheiratet mit Regina Catharina von Schneen.

The first known ancestor was Georg Daniel Riefkohl, *1660 in Göttingen, Germany. He was a tax collector in Göttingen and the Public Prosecutor of the "Dumontisches Regiment" (army). His wife was Regina Catharina von Schneen.
